Stainless Steel-17-4PH
17-4PH Description
17-4PH is a precipitation hardened(PH) martensitic stainless steel consisted of copper and niobium/tantalum. This grade features high strength, hardness and corrosion resistance. Its mechanical properties can be optimized by heat treatment with the compression strength achieving up to 1100-1300 mpa (160-190 ksi). This type can be strengthened by directly obtaining martensite structure after solution treatment. With subsequent aging treatment, the precipitation hardened phase (including copper phase) is further strengthened. Due to low carbon content, it features better workability, corrosion resistance and weldability than Martensitic Stainless Steels such as Cr13 and 9Cr18 and 1Cr17Ni2..
This alloy has outstanding corrosion resistance similar to 304-grade stainless steel for various food, paper, and chemical industries, and it resists corrosive effects better than many other stainless steels. Certain qualities enable manufacturers to improve product reliability while simplifying manufacturing and, in many cases, lowering costs.
It can maintain high strength up to 600°F. At higher temperatures, 17-4 PH offers excellent resistance against stress corrosion cracking (SCC). 17-4 PH has a particular combination of characteristics, making it an excellent option for various design and manufacturing issues.
17-4 PH is better known as grade 630 stainless steel and is helpful as the precipitation-hardening metal. It requires heat treatment to generate a broad range of incredibly high-strength qualities compared to similar PH alloys.
It has more ferrite than typical PH grades, making it significantly more magnetic. Heat treatments can be applicable prior to cold working to increase formability.
17-4 PH has good corrosion resistance and hardness in welds and base metals. It’s ideal for uses that demand simple construction, additional strength, and hardness for increased reliability. That is why the grade is useful in the aerospace, pulp & paper, food processing, and nuclear industries.
Undeniably, 17-4 PH stainless steel is the most commonly useful PH stainless steel grade. The 17-4 PH grade possesses a perfect mix of resistance to corrosion, excellent tensile strength, plus good mechanical qualities at extreme temperatures. These properties make it a highly versatile alloy that is practical for various applications. It is the best and most popular stainless steel bar stock due to its exceptional qualities and low cost.
